Gorleston by the Sea
“Deservedly popular is Great Yarmouth’s delightful southern suburb, Gorleston, which like a son come of age, has with sturdy courage and vigour, started a successful career on it’s own account”
So expounds a travel writer in 1919, who goes on to say…
Few places have grown so quickly; and it is difficult to realise that on the spot where the Cliff Hotel now stands, a rustic windmill waved gaunt arms a few years ago over an expanse of wild heath
Though officially part of Great Yarmouth, Gorleston is a self-contained seaside resort in it’s own right.
It is a quieter resort with a smaller smattering of amusements, gift shops and cafes on the beach parade, and a town with narrow winding streets and bustling main high street, with shops galore.
Gorleston has a sandy and very popular beach formed within a cove by the harbour entrance to the River Yare and the easterly shoreline.
The beach extends southward all the way past Hopton, Corton, to Lowestoft, and to Southwold and beyond.
There are deckchair and children’s entertainment facilities on the beach itself, with restaurants, cafes, ice-cream kiosks, amusements and a couple of pubs just a stone’s throw from the beach.
A lifeguard station is to be found on the promenade itself.
The wide promenade is flanked on the west by gently sloping cliffs that lead up to the superbly gardened and lawned Marine Parade.
